Kraków packing essentials
Kraków rewards walkers — the Old Town, Kazimierz and Wawel are all reachable on foot, and the cobblestones make comfortable, grippy shoes essential in any season. In winter (Nov–Mar) temperatures regularly drop below zero and wind chill off the Vistula can be sharp — pack proper layers, a warm coat, hat, gloves and scarf. In summer the city gets warm (20–27°C) but evenings stay cool, so a light jacket is always useful.
For Wieliczka Salt Mine: the underground chambers are a constant 14°C regardless of outside temperature — bring a light layer even in summer. The standard tour involves around 800 steps in total (descent is ~380 steps) and uneven stone paths, so trainers or walking shoes are better than sandals.
For Tatra Mountains / Zakopane: if hiking to Morskie Oko (8 km trail) or Kasprowy Wierch, pack proper hiking footwear, sun protection, and layers — altitude means conditions change fast even in summer. Trekking poles are helpful on steep trails.
