Best time to visit Kraków

Quick season overview

Spring & Autumn (Apr–May, Sep–Oct)

Best overall. Mild 10–20°C, fewer crowds than summer, shoulder prices. Kraków blooms in spring. September brings golden light and quieter streets. Ideal for walking the Old Town and day trips.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Peak season. Warm 18–28°C, maximum daylight, vibrant outdoor life. Wianki Festival (June), Jewish Culture Festival (late June/early July). Busiest and most expensive — book 2–3 months ahead for Auschwitz.

Winter (Nov–Mar)

Off-season value. Cold -4 to 5°C, possible snow (beautiful on the Old Town). Late Nov through 1 Jan: magical Christmas markets on Main Market Square. Lowest hotel rates of the year outside the festive peak.

Our recommendation

For first-time visitors, May and September offer the best balance of pleasant weather (15–22°C), manageable crowds and fair prices. If you want a magical atmosphere and don't mind cold, the first two weeks of December — when the Christmas markets are at their peak — are a memorable time to visit. July is superb for the Jewish Culture Festival but book everything well in advance.

For day trips to Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains, June through September gives the best conditions for hiking. Wieliczka Salt Mine is underground and climate-controlled at 14°C year-round, so the season doesn't affect the visit itself.
